IT Apprentices

Thomas Fahy - IT Support

  • What made you choose an apprenticeship?

When I was a 6th Form student at Witham Academy I decided to learn industry recognised qualifications, i.e. CCNA, CompTIA A+, my I.T. teachers noticed this and advised me to take an apprenticeship due to the strong theory knowledge I have. Due to not doing many I.T practical’s when I was a student, I thought this would be a great idea to expand on my practical skills.

  • Why should other individuals choose to complete an apprenticeship?

If you complete an apprenticeship you will gain new skills from the IT team, if completing an IT apprenticeship, and you will also get industry recognised I.T qualifications upon completion.

  • What does your apprenticeship include?

My apprenticeship role doesn’t differ much from any 1st Line Support IT Technician. Some of my roles include: Manging the ticket system, responding to calls, helping staff, students and supporting other IT colleagues when required.

  • What have you learnt since starting your apprenticeship?

I picked IT as a subject in school and I did not learn much due to the technical knowledge I already had – although other students benefited from this. If you choose an apprenticeship, you will be working with experienced technicians who will teach you the skills you need. I have learnt many new skills – not just technical skills, but communication and how to respond to different customers in an appropriate way.

  • How has this helped you in your career prospects?

The apprenticeship has given me a good start, this means I will have gained 3 extra valuable qualifications. This program helped me significantly, this means I will now be able to do continue further qualifications that I began in 6th Form more easily. I recommend this course to those who have great theory skills but lack on practical.

  • What made you choose an apprenticeship?

I chose to do an apprenticeship as you get a lot of experience in the job role you want to do in the future. This also gives you confidence in the world of work.

  • Why should other individuals choose to complete an apprenticeship?

I think an apprenticeship is the best place to start your career in as it will give you a head start by a mile! Going into work without any experience is hard, but if you take it slow and go onto an apprenticeship program, there are so many people who can will help you achieve and help you progress into your chosen job role.

  • What does your apprenticeship include?

My apprenticeship role offers a variety of different parts in it, one of them is meeting new people that are very experienced in the job role and they help you wherever they can, it also build’s your confidence by doing individual jobs.

  • What have you learnt since starting your apprenticeship?

When I went into secondary school and college I didn’t learn much about apprenticeships. Schools only offer basic information based on the subjects you choose, but if you go onto the apprenticeship you will find that not only it gives you help where needed but it also gives you qualifications, which will help you to get a better job in the future. This can sometimes mean that it is better than completing a course or A Levels.

  • How has this helped you in your career prospects?

This program gave me a head start in my career progress as now I will have 3 extra qualifications in Cisco IT but also other qualifications related to IT.

I think this program helped me in a significant amount and I am highly recommending this to anyone who wants a better future!
